There is something quietly satisfying about knitting a sweater a man will actually reach for. This one is a classic crew neck in a deep, wearable red, with a saddle shoulder that gives it the squared, tailored line of a good ready to wear sweater. He will pull it on over a shirt on cool mornings and live in it all winter.

It is an easy mens sweater knitting pattern to work, even though the finished sweater looks tailored. You knit three small flaps first, then pick up around them and knit the whole thing in one piece from the neck down, so there is almost no seaming and nothing to assemble at the end. • Knit from the neck down in one piece, starting with two saddle shoulder flaps and a back neck extension, with only a short seam at the back shoulders

• Techniques used: knit, purl, stockinette stitch, M1R and M1L increases, k2tog and ssk decreases, picking up stitches, adding stitches at the end of a row, 1×1 ribbing, knitting in the round. Full explanations are given in the pattern.
