Before You Start Your Plume Scales Blanket Crochet Stitch Tutorial
Materials
- 4.5 mm / US 7 hook
- WeCrochet Wool of the Andes (worsted weight (4), 100% superwash wool, 50g/1.75oz, 100m/110yd) in Fjord Heather. You will need about 160g / 320 m / 352 yd.
- Tapestry needle
- Measuring tape
Size
The Blanket section is approximately 8 cm / 3.25” tall and 127 cm / 50 inches wide.
This section features the crocodile stitch which requires a stitch multiple of 6 + 6 st.
Gauge
The gauge for this pattern, in stitch pattern, is 17.5 st by 13 rows for a 10 cm by 10 cm / 4” by 4” square.
Abbreviations
This pattern uses US notations.
- st = stitch
- sl st = slip stitch
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- WS = wrong side
- RS = right side
Notes
Work instructions between [] the indicated number of times or until the end of the row / round.
The final number of stitches is indicated at the end of the row / round between < >.
The turning ch 1, ch 2 don’t count as stitches throughout the pattern except if mentioned otherwise.
The pattern is written in crochet shorthand. For example:
- “dc 1” means to double crochet in the next stitch,
- “dc 2” means to double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches,
- and “2 dc” means to double crochet twice in the next st.
Special Stitches
Scale = work 5 dc down the first post of the 2-dc pair, ch 1 and rotate, work 5 dc up the second post of the 2-dc pair (scale made)

Row 3: Ch 2, hdc 4, make scale on first dc pair, [ch 1, skip next dc pair, make scale on next dc pair] until last dc pair, hdc 4, turn. < 33 scales, 34 unworked dc pairs, 8 hdc>
Row 4: Ch 2, hdc 4, 2 dc in middle of first scale, [ch 2, working underneath scale make 2 dc in middle of next dc pair, ch 2, 2 dc in middle of next scale] in last 4 st, hdc 4, turn.
Row 5: Ch 2, hdc 4,skip first pair of 2 dc, [make scale on next dc pair, ch 1, skip 2 dc] until last 4 st, hdc 4, turn.
Row 6: Ch 2,hdc 4, working underneath scale make 2 dc in middle of first dc pair, [ch 2, 2 dc in middle of next scale, ch 2, working underneath scale make 2 dc in middle of next dc pair] until last 4 st, hdc 4, turn.
Repeat rows 3 – 5 once.
Final Row: Ch 2, hdc 4, [4 dc in middle of next dc pair, 4 dc in the middle of next scale] until last dc pair, 4 dc in middle of dc pair, hdc 4.
Fasten off and work divider section.
