What is a Crochet-Along (aka CAL)?

A crochet-along (CAL) is a fun and inspiring event where crocheters from all over the world come together to work on the same pattern at the same time. While CALs can vary in style and format, they always share a strong sense of community—offering support, encouragement, and a chance to learn from one another.

If you’re new to crochet-alongs, don’t worry! They may seem a little intimidating at first, but they’re a wonderful way to build your skills, connect with fellow makers, and most importantly—have fun along the way.

Upgrade Your Crochet-Along Experience

We know not everyone likes to jump around the website to follow the CAL, so I have put together an eBook for the Skybound Sampler Blanket which includes all the 8 different blanket stripe patterns, divider for in between stripes and border pattern. With over 49 pages of detailed instructions, step-by-step photo tutorials for any special stitches (as well as charts and videos) the blanket eBook is very convenient to follow along.

In addition to the ebook, you can choose to upgrade to the Journey Pass for the FULL Crochet-along experience with ad-free access to the videos in a convenient portal, a 30-day free trial to my Stitching Squad membership as well as 1 bonus stripe designs!

You can already get a head start and upgrade here.

Whether:

  • You don’t want to jump around the website to follow the different section’s instructions
  • You just want to get the patterns without ads
  • You want to print the patterns and take notes
  • You want the extra guidance and support

Non Wool Alternatives

If you’re allergic to wool or making it for someone who might be here are some non-wool alternative recommendations:

You can also substitute with any worsted weight yarn you’d like. I do recommend you avoid fuzzy yarns or yarns with a lot of halo and variegated colorways as they tend to have a lower stitch definition and you’re final project will not show off the beautiful stitches you’ve worked up as well.

Crochet Hooks

Material List

  • WeCrochet Wool of the Andes (worsted weight (4), 100% superwash wool, 50g/1.75oz, 100m/110yd) in Icicle Heather, Fjord Heather, Brass Heather and Oyster Heather.
  • Crochet Hooks:
    • 4 mm / US G – 6
    • 4.5 mm / US 7
    • 5 mm / US H-8
  • Tapestry needle to weave in the ends
  • Measuring tape
  • Optional: Stitch markers to help you keep track of repeats

More or Less Colors?

What if you want to make the Tidal Textures Throw with more or less colors? Great idea! As each stripe has a different stitch design, it will look great in one or more colors.

Here are the individual stripe yarn requirements (used for the sample blanket) so you can plan accordingly:

Divider

  • 35g / 70 m / 77 yd per divider section.

Stripes

  • Part 1 Chicken Feet: 120g / 240 m / 265 yd.
  • Part 2 Bird Prints: 35g / 70 m / 77 yd.
  • Part 3 Fans and V’s: 122g / 244 m / 267 yd.
  • Part 4 Hummingbirds: 200g / 400 m / 440 yd.
  • Part 5 Flight Formation: 75g / 150 m / 160 yd.
  • Part 6 Eagle Flight: 230g / 460 m / 506 yd.
  • Part 7 Plume Scales: 160g / 320 m / 352 yd.
  • Part 8 Feathers: 140g / 280m / 308 yd.

Border

  • 25g / 50m / 60 yd in Oyster heather.
  • 50g / 100m / 110 yd in Brass Heather.
  • 125g / 250m / 275yd in Fjord Heather.

Note: For the lapghan size you’ll need 15% less yarn for each section you’ll make.

Note: Keep in mind that these are approximate yardages, make sure you have some extra in case your tension is a little different.

Gauge

The gauge for this blanket is 17.5 st for a 10 cm by 10 cm / 4” by 4” square. The row height gauge is different for every section. Refer to the individual pattern sections below.

The Blanket is designed with a 4.5 mm / US 7 crochet hook.

Since each stripe has a different stitch pattern, to meet gauge for each stripe and have even edges on your blanket, we recommend you go down or up a hook size for some sections so you can get the same gauge for every section as some stitch patterns are tighter or looser than others.

Start by identifying which hook size you need to get the base gauge of 17.5 st / 10 cm or 4” in alternating rows of single and double crochet. This will be your base hook size.

Refer to the blanket sample notes for any adjustments depending on the stripe stitch pattern.

The row height gauge is not as important for this design since each section has a different width for an intentional irregularity, this makes it very flexible for variations in gauge and will not impact the overall look of your blanket.

Level

The crochet-a-long blanket is a beginner to intermediate-level crochet blanket pattern inspired by the beauty of birds. Step-by-step photos as well as videos are provided for any special stitches featured. The CAL is a great opportunity to get extra support and improve your crochet skills!

Overall Notes

  • All pictures are taken with a left-handed crocheter. When any difference is needed for right-handed crocheters, instructions for both right and left-handed crocheters are given.
  • Start your blanket with Part 1: Chicken feet. Once you finish part 1, work a divider section. After which you will move on to Part 2 followed by another divider section, and continue in this manner until you finish Part 8. Finally, you’ll work the border around the entire blanket.
