Before You Start Your Chicken Feet Blanket Section Crochet Stitch Tutorial

Materials

● 5 mm / US H – 8 hook 

WeCrochet Wool of the Andes (worsted weight (4), 100% superwash wool, 50g/1.75oz,  100m/110yd) in Icicle Heather. 

You will need about 70g / 140 m / 153 yd. 

● Tapestry needle

● Measuring tape

Size

The Blanket section is approximately 12 cm / 5” tall and 127 cm / 50” wide. 

The chicken feet stitch requires a stitch multiple of 3 st. 

Gauge

The gauge for this pattern, in stitch pattern, is 17.5 st by 16 rows for a 10 cm by 10 cm / 4” by  4” square. 

Note: To meet the blanket gauge of 17.5 st / 10 cm, this section was crocheted with a 5 mm /  US H-8 hook, aka one size up from the blanket standard hook.

Abbreviations

Free Yarn Jargon Cheatsheets

This pattern uses US notations. 

● st = stitch 

● ch = chain 

● sc = single crochet 

● dc = double crochet 

● bpsc = back post single crochet 

● RS = right side 

● WS = wrong side 

Notes

Work instructions between [] the indicated number of times or until the end of the row /  round. The final number of stitches is indicated at the end of the row / round between < >. 

The turning ch 1, ch 2 don’t count as stitches throughout the pattern except if mentioned  otherwise. 

The pattern is written in crochet shorthand. For example: 

● “dc 1” means to double crochet in the next stitch, 

● “dc 2” means to double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches, 

● and “2 dc” means to double crochet twice in the next st. 

Special Stitches and Repeated Patterns  

● Back post single crochet (bpsc): 

o Insert hook from back to front to back behind the single crochet post below,  yarn over, and pull up a long loop (2 loops on hook). 

o Yarn over and pull through all loops.

The Actual Chicken Feet Blanket Section Crochet Pattern Free

As this is the first section, start with ch 210 + 1 and start working row 1 in 2nd ch from hook.

Row 1 (WS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook, ch 3, skip 2, [sc, ch 3, skip 2] until last 3 st, sc, ch 3, skip 1,  sc, turn. < 70 ch-3 spaces, 71 sc>  Row 2 (RS): Ch 2, dc, [skip ch-3, 3 dc in sc] until last ch-3, skip ch-3, 2 dc in sc, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc, [ch 3, bpsc in middle of next dc cluster] until last 3 st, skip 1, ch 3, sc in last  st. Repeat Row 2 and 3 until length is approximately 12 cm / 5” finishing on a Row 2.

Final row (WS): Ch 1, sc 3, [bpsc in middle dc below, sc 2] until end of row,  turn.

Fasten off and work divider section.
