If you love projects that blend simplicity with eye-catching detail, this center-out chunky blanket pattern is sure to become a favorite. Designed in three versatile sizes, it starts right from the middle and grows outward, creating a timeless classic you’ll reach for again and again. The chunky-weight yarn adds irresistible coziness and works up quickly, making this blanket as satisfying to knit as it is to snuggle under.
What truly sets this design apart is its beautiful balance of textures. A clean stockinette center is framed by a richly textured border, giving the blanket a romantic, heirloom feel. Elegant increase lines radiate from the center, adding subtle visual interest without complicating the process. Materials
Note: the entire blanket is knitted in the round. You’ll start with only very few stitches for which you can choose to use double pointed needles or the magic loop method. After a few increases you’ll be able to switch to simply working in the round but you’ll need a long cable (80 cm / 32” (100 cm / 40” for the bigger size) or above) to be able to fit all the stitches. If using interchangeable circular needles, I recommend using swivel cords as they’ll help reduce strain on your wrists.
- Hue & Me Pink Earth [617-195U] (Bulky/Chunky (5), 80% Acrylic; 20% wool, 125 g / 4.4 oz, 125 m / 137 yd):
- Baby: 4 skeins
- Throw: 10 skeins
- King: 28 skeins
- Tapestry needle to weave in the ends.
- Recommended: tape measure to avoid counting rounds, (round counts also provided)
- 4 stitch markers
Size
This square blanket pattern comes in 3 sizes, noted baby (throw, king): 90 (150, 275) cm / 35.5 (59, 108.5)” throughout the pattern. Pictures show the baby size.
| Blanket sizes | Inches | Centimeters | ||||
| Width | Length | Width | Length | |||
| Baby | 35.5 | 35.5 | 90 | 90 | ||
| Throw | 59 | 59 | 150 | 150 | ||
| King | 108.5 | 108.5 | 275 | 275 | ||
You can easily adapt it to any size by working the center section until the total width and length is 20cm / 8” less than the final size you want. You’ll then work the 10cm / 4” border around.

Disappearing Loop Cast On
This is a very neat, secure and quick centre out cast on.

This is the Youtube tutorial I’ve followed.
Start by making a loop with your yarn, with the tail going under the working yarn and pointing towards the hand you use to hold your working needle. Pinch where the yarn crosses and hold that spot against your working needle (in the usual hand). Use your other hand to keep the loop open. Insert the needle down through the loop and draw the working yarn through to make your first stitch. Now yarn over for the next stitch.
Keep alternating between drawing up a stitch through the loop and making a yarn over until you have 8 stitches.
Now split the stitches between your double-pointed needles, or in half if you’re using the magic loop method. Take extra care not to drop the last stitch. You’re ready for your first round.

Border
Stitch counts in this section are based on blankets with the exact number of rounds given above for each size; if you have used cm or inch measurements to decide when to start the border or are making your own custom sized blanket, you may have more or fewer stitches (which isn’t a problem!), in which case each increase round in the border will add 8 sts to your previous round’s stitch count.
