Inspiration
For some designs I wake up with a great idea and go from there, others have a more practical origin. This is the case with this Leon men hat crochet pattern. Last year, my little brother (his name is Leon, how surprising ;), but it’s my hobby Mr Artichoke modeling in the pics), came to me with a very specific hat request. He wanted a men’s hat with a simple design, a snug fit, that would keep his ears warm and protected from the cold winds but wouldn’t overheat his always too warm head. Pretty specific right?
I love making things that my friends and family ask for as I’m sure they will actually wear them, and he very rarely asks for anything so I went to work and designed this easy men’s hat crochet pattern.

He wore his first sample all through last winter, so much so that I told him it could go in the washer but he wouldn’t let me because he would have to miss it for a few days. I instantly made him a couple more and thought if he likes it soo much, you (or the men in your life) will too so I wrote up the pattern for you.
The Yarn and Construction
For this men’s hat crochet pattern to keep your ears warm and isolated from the wind but not have your head overheat I decided to work with worsted weight yarn. It’s usually a good compromise yarn weight.
The hat is crocheted from the top down seamlessly in the round. The body of the hat is worked in alternating rows of sc and dc so your stitches are a bit more open and not too warm. The section covering the ears is worked in dense sc stitches to keep the wind out and ensure a snug fit.

Special Techniques
- Magic Loop; if you’re not familiar with this technique, this detailed tutorial (includes a video) will help you.
Tips and Tricks
The hat is worked in continuous spirals except on the rounds when changing colors. To avoid having a jagged line at the junction when changing colors, I like to finish the last round of a color with a sl st and start the new round with a chain.
You can easily carry the unused color on the inside of the hat to avoid extra ends.

The Leon Men’s Crochet Hat Pattern
With your 4.5 mm hook and MC yarn, make 6 sc in a magic loop. Work in continuous rounds from here onwards.

Round 1: 2 sc in each st around. <12 st>
Tip: use a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of the round.

Round 2: [2 sc in the next st, sc] around. <18 st>
Round 3: [2 sc in the next st, sc 2] around. <24 st>
Round 4: [2 sc in the next st, sc 3] around. <30 st>
Round 5: [2 sc in the next st, sc 4] around. <36 st>
Round 6: [2 sc in the next st, sc 5] around. <42 st>
Round 7: [2 sc in the next st, sc 6] around. <48 st>
Round 8: [2 sc in the next st, sc 7] around. <54 st>
Round 9: [2 sc in the next st, sc 8] around. <60 st>
Round 10: [2 sc in the next st, sc 9] around. <66 st>
For the small size finish last round with a sl st in the next st and skip to Round 12.
Round 11: [2 sc in the next st, sc 10] around. <72 st>

Finish last round with a sl st in the next st.
Note: tThis 2 –color section of the hat is worked in joined rounds. Finishing each round with a sl st and starting the next one with a chain.
Switch to CC yarn.
Round 12: Ch 2, dc in same st as sl st, dc around, finish with a sl st in 2nd ch.
Switch to MC yarn.
Round 13: Ch 1, sc around, finish with a sl st in ch.

Repeat Rounds 12 and 13 in alternating colors 6 (7) times.
Keep working in MC yarn. Finish the hat by working in continuous rounds again.
Round 14: Sc around.
Repeat Round 14 another 6 times.
Bind off and weave in the ends.
Optional: Blocking
You’re done with the crocheting part. Make sure to weave in all the ends.
To make your hat even prettier, help even your stitches and give it its best shape, carefully block your hat.
