Inspiration

For some designs I wake up with a great idea and go from there, others have a more practical origin. This is the case with this Leon men hat crochet pattern. Last year, my little brother (his name is Leon, how surprising ;), but it’s my hobby Mr Artichoke modeling in the pics), came to me with a very specific hat request. He wanted a men’s hat with a simple design, a snug fit, that would keep his ears warm and protected from the cold winds but wouldn’t overheat his always too warm head. Pretty specific right?

I love making things that my friends and family ask for as I’m sure they will actually wear them, and he very rarely asks for anything so I went to work and designed this easy men’s hat crochet pattern.

He wore his first sample all through last winter, so much so that I told him it could go in the washer but he wouldn’t let me because he would have to miss it for a few days. I instantly made him a couple more and thought if he likes it soo much, you (or the men in your life) will too so I wrote up the pattern for you.

The Yarn and Construction

For this men’s hat crochet pattern to keep your ears warm and isolated from the wind but not have your head overheat I decided to work with worsted weight yarn. It’s usually a good compromise yarn weight.

The hat is crocheted from the top down seamlessly in the round. The body of the hat is worked in alternating rows of sc and dc so your stitches are a bit more open and not too warm. The section covering the ears is worked in dense sc stitches to keep the wind out and ensure a snug fit.

Men’s Crochet Hat Sizes

The men’s hat crochet pattern is available in 2 sizes: small and large. Sizes are noted small (large) throughout the pattern.

The pictures illustrate the large size.

The hat is designed to fit following head circumferences:

  • Small: 56 – 59 cm / 22 – 23.25”
  • Large: 59 – 62 cm / 23.25 – 24.5”

The hat is designed to fit with a snug fit.

Gauge

The gauge for this pattern is not crucial.

For reference, my diameter after round 3 is 5 cm / 2”.

Abbreviations

This pattern uses US notations.

  • st = stitch
  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • MC = main color
  • CC = contrasting color

Notes

Work instructions between [] the indicated number of times or until the end of the row / round.

The final number of stitches is indicated at the end of the row / round between < >.

The turning ch 1, ch 2 don’t count as stitches throughout the pattern except if mentioned otherwise.

The pattern is written in crochet shorthand.  For example:

  • “sc 2” means to single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches,
  • and “2 sc” means to single crochet twice in the next st.

Special Techniques

Tips and Tricks

The hat is worked in continuous spirals except on the rounds when changing colors. To avoid having a jagged line at the junction when changing colors, I like to finish the last round of a color with a sl st and start the new round with a chain.

You can easily carry the unused color on the inside of the hat to avoid extra ends.
