Fireside Mittens: Easy Crochet Mittens – Medium size

Fireside Mittens Easy Crochet Pattern FREE

Winter is around the corner in the northern hemisphere and I’m starting to prep my Christmas presents (if you’re wondering what I’d love to get this year, head over to my Yarn Lovers Gift Guide). Of course, I’m trying to get as many gifts handmade as I can. This easy crochet mittens pattern is one of these.

This post is for the medium size of the Fireside Mittens only. Head over here for the general post and other sizes.

This means I earn some yarn money if you make a purchase through one of these links (of course at no extra cost for you!), which I promise to use to create more awesome patterns like this one. All opinions are my own. See my full disclosure here

Before you Start

Materials

  • 3.5 mm/ US E – 4 crochet hook.
  • Love me Knots fiber DK weight yarn (100% Superwash Merino, 211m/231 yards) in Peanut Butter and Jam colorway – 1 skein for small size, 2 skeins for the other sizes.
  • Tapestry needle to weave in the ends. I love this set as it has different eye sizes for different yarn thicknesses and it comes in a small tube which is very convenient so I don’t lose them.
  • T pins for blocking.

The Yarn

The yarn I used is Peanut Butter and Jam from Love Me Knots Fiber on her gorgeous DK base. The variegated yarn is highlighted by the sober design. It’s soft, warm and full of varying colors. All shades of pink-red and brown are represented.

Have you worked with hand-dyed yarn before? If not, I strongly encourage you too. Yes, it’s more pricey but it’s so worth it. Each skein is unique and indie dyers create the most amazing colorways. Each stitch is a discovery as you never know exactly what colors will show or not and how they will come together exactly. I’m always captivated and it’s even much harder than with classic yarn to stop crocheting. I just need to see what the next stitch will look like.

Size

The mittens are available in S, M and L size but this post is only for size Medium. You can find the other sizes and general information here.

Below are the hand dimensions for the different sizes (not the final glove dimensions).

  • Small: palm 8 cm / 3.15” wide and hand 17 cm / 6.7” long
  • Medium: palm 9.5 cm /3.75” wide and hand 18 cm / 7” long
  • Large: palm 11 cm / 4.3” wide and hand 18 cm / 7” long

Gauge

The gauge for this pattern, in alternating rows of sc and dc is 21 st by 16 rows for a 10 cm by 10 cm square (4” by 4”).

Abbreviations & Instructions

This pattern follows US notations

  • st = stitch
  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • fsc = foundation single crochet. Refer to special stitches below.
  • inc = increase = make 2 st in the same stitch
  • skip = miss stitch
  • sl st = slip stitch

Notes

Work instructions between [] the indicated number of times or until the end of the round.

The final number of stitches is indicated at the end of the round between < >.

The turning ch 1, ch 2 does not count as stitches throughout the pattern except if mentioned otherwise.

I use a turning ch 2 for dc stitches as I find it gives me a neater edge.

Stitches above a ch-1 space are worked in the ch-1 space.

Special Stitches

Foundation single crochet (fsc): ch 2, insert hook into 2nd ch from hook, pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through first loop (making a “chain”). Yarn over and pull through both loops on hook.

Insert hook into previous “chain” you made (It should look like you go through a resemblance of a “normal” st, with 2 strands of yarn), pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through first loop (making a “chain”). Yarn over and pull through both loops on hook.

Repeat until you reached the desired number of stitches. If you are not familiar with this technique, I recommend this very helpful tutorial by Joy of Motion Crochet.

Tips and Tricks

  • The mittens are started with a row of fsc instead of a chain and row of sc. This is to give more stretch to this first row so you can slide your hand in your mittens without it being too loose at the wrist.
  • Don’t hesitate to try your mittens on as you go to see how they fit and if you want to make any adjustments!
