The Arrowhead Lace stitch is a beautifully structured lace pattern that combines delicate openwork with strong geometric lines. Created through a thoughtful balance of yarn overs and decreases, the stitch forms repeating arrowhead shapes that flow naturally across the fabric. The result is a design that feels both airy and defined, with each motif standing out while still blending seamlessly into the overall pattern.

This stitch has a gentle rhythm that becomes intuitive as you work through the repeats. The combination of solid knit sections and open lace panels gives the fabric texture and depth, making it especially striking when worked in a smooth, light-colored yarn where the details can really shine. Despite its intricate appearance, the pattern is approachable and rewarding, offering a satisfying progression as the arrowhead shapes begin to emerge.

Whether used in a shawl or adapted into other projects, the Arrowhead Lace stitch brings an elegant, timeless quality to your knitting. Scroll down to explore the full free pattern and see how this stitch comes together row by row.

Special Stitches

Free Yarn Jargon Cheatsheets

Cdd (central double decrease) = Slip 2 stitches together knitwise (as if to knit 2 together), knit the next stitch, then pass the 2 slipped stitches over the stitch you just knit and off the needle.

You’ve decreased 2 stitches into 1, and the decrease leans symmetrically to the center.

Notes

To improve the neat finish of your ssk and avoid a staircase effect on the ssk diagonals: slip the 1st st as if to knit, slip the 2nd st as if to purl (instead of knit) then finish the stitch as usual. This will twist the back stitch making it tighter and giving the overall decrease a neater finish.
