Matching Winter Hats were Never Easier!
Creating matching hats for your family has never been easier than with this free mommy-and-me hat knitting pattern. Created out of a simple garter stitch rectangle, it’s a wonderful project for any beginner. If you know how to use straight needles and knit a garter stitch, you can make this super easy hat!
With sizing from preemie to adult, you’ll want to make one for everyone you know!

Before you Start your Easy Knit Hat
Materials
- 5 mm / US 8 knitting needles
- Worsted weight wool yarn: 1 100g skein for preemie, baby and toddler sizes, 2 skeins for the other sizes
- Tapestry needle to weave in the ends. I love this set as it has different eye sizes for different yarn thicknesses and it comes in a small tube which is very convenient so I don’t lose them.
Unfortunately, this yarn seems unavailable on Amazon currently so I have listed a few suggestions for substitutes here:
Size
The hat is sized for the following sizes: preemie, baby, toddler, child, teen, and adult.
Gauge
With 5mm / US 8 needles, the gauge in garter stitch is 15 stitches by 32 rows for a 10 cm / 4” square.
The Actual Easy Hat Knitting Pattern
On 5 mm / US 8 needles cast on the following number of stitches:
- Preemie size: 56 stitches
- Baby size: 67 stitches
- Toddler size: 70 stitches
- Child size: 74 stitches
- Teen size: 78 stitches
- Adult size: 85 stitches
Knit in garter stitch (knit on both sides) until you reach the following length:
- Preemie size: 15 cm /6”
- Baby size: 20 cm / 7.75”
- Toddler size: 24 cm / 9.5”
- Child size: 25 cm / 10”
- Teen size: 26 cm / 10.25”
- Adult size: 27 cm / 10.5”

Cut the yarn leaving a long tail for sewing.
With a tapestry needle pull the yarn through all the stitches.

Pull tight to close the hole and sew both sides together. Weave in the ends.

Fold the brim over approximately 5 cm / 2”. You can secure it with a couple of stitches or leave it as is (which makes it possible to adjust over your ears as you want).

Make a pompom and sew it to the top of your hat.
