The Yarn: Lion Brand Wool-Ease DK
The Out & About Men’s Sweater is knit in Lion Brand Wool-Ease DK, a light weight 3 yarn made of 80% acrylic and 20% wool. It has the warmth and structure of wool with the easy care of acrylic, so the finished sweater can go through the washing machine without drama. That matters for a sweater meant to be worn out and about, not saved for special occasions.
The sample is knit in the Redwood colorway, a deep brick red that looks dressy over a collared shirt and just as good with jeans. You will need 4 (5, 5, 6, 6, 7, 7, 8) skeins depending on your size.

A Top Down Raglan Sweater Knitting Pattern with Saddle Shoulders
This sweater is a saddle shoulder raglan combo, worked top down. You start with two small shoulder flaps and a back neck extension, pick up stitches around them, and then knit the whole sweater in one piece, in the round, from the neck down. There are no side seams, just a short bit of sewing where the back panel meets the shoulder flaps.
The saddle shoulders give the sweater a tailored, classic menswear look that a plain raglan sweater knitting pattern does not have, and the top down construction means you can try it on as you go. If it looks familiar, that is because it is the grown up version of my Out & About Boy Sweater, sized up for men and reworked in DK weight.

Sizing and Fit for This Mens Jumper Knitting Pattern
The pattern is graded for sizes S to 5XL, with a finished chest of 40 to 67.25 inches and about 4 inches of positive ease built in for a standard, comfortable fit. The pictures show size L.
The length is easy to adjust: simply work more or fewer rows in the main body before starting the ribbing. And if you are knitting for someone who already has this one, my other knitting patterns for men make good follow up projects.

Special Stitches and Techniques
Picking up stitches: if you’re not familiar with this technique, this tutorial is very helpful.
Adding stitches on the end of a row: This is done by looping the yarn over your index finger from front to back and sliding the loop knitwise onto the working needle. If you would like to see how the stitches for the back and front neckline are cast on after working around the first Saddle Shoulder Flap, there is a video on my website.
Construction
You’ll work the shoulder section flat first, then knit the rest of the sweater in one piece, in the round, from the neck down.
Start by making two little flaps for the saddle shoulders and one for the back neck, and pop the live stitches onto stitch holders to keep them safe. Then you’ll build the upper chest and shoulders. Pick up stitches along the row ends of one shoulder flap, from the cast on edge down to the live stitches, slip those live stitches back onto your needle, and keep picking up along the row ends on the other side of the same flap. Add the live stitches from the back neck flap, then work your way around the second shoulder flap in exactly the same way.
From here you’ll knit a few rows of increases to shape the shoulders and gently curve the front neckline. Next you’ll add a few stitches for the front neckline and join to work in the round, still increasing for the shoulders and, a little later, the chest. Once you divide the stitches, you’ll work the sleeves and body in the round, decreasing to taper the sleeves and finishing with ribbing. Add ribbing to the neckline and your sweater is done.
