Before you Start

Materials

Size

The square is designed to be 20cm by 20cm / 8” by 8”.

Gauge

The gauge for this pattern, in rows of sc with 6mm / US J – 10 hook is 15 st by 23 rows for a 10 cm by 10 cm square (4” by 4”).

Abbreviations

This pattern uses US notations.

  • st = stitch
  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet

Notes

Work instructions between [] the indicated number of times or until the end of the row / round.

The final number of stitches is indicated at the end of the row / round between < >.

The turning ch 1 doesn’t count as a stitch throughout the pattern except if mentioned otherwise.

The pattern is written in crochet shorthand.  For example:

  • “sc 1” means to single crochet in the next stitch,
  • “sc 2” means to single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches,
  • and “2 sc” means to single crochet twice in the next st.

Tips and Tricks

To avoid weaving in a ton of ends you can carry up the yarn after each color section. These will get hidden in the final border.

The Actual Candy Cane Square Pattern

The square is worked in rows back and forth on the diagonal.

With your 6mm / US J – 10 hook, ch 1 in Oyster color.

Row 1: 2 sc in the back bump of the chain, turn. <2 st>

Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st across, turn. <4 st>

Row 3: Ch 1, sc across, turn.

Row 4 (Increase Row): Ch 1, 2 sc, sc until last st, 2sc, turn. <6 st>

Row 5 – 10: Repeat Rows 3 and 4. <12 st>

Switch to Love Letter color yarn.

Row 11 – 12: Repeat increase row. <16 st>

Switch to Oyster color yarn.

Row 13 – 18: Repeat Rows 3 and 4. <22 st>

Switch to Love Letter color yarn.

Row 19 – 20: Repeat increase row. <26 st>

Switch to Oyster color yarn.

Row 21 – 26: Repeat Rows 3 and 4. <32 st>

Switch to Love Letter color yarn.

Row 27: Repeat increase row. <34 st>

Row 28 (Decrease Row): Ch 1, sc2tog, sc until last 2 st, sc2tog, turn. <32 st>

Switch to Oyster color yarn.

Row 29: Repeat Row 3.

Row 30: Repeat decrease row. <30 st>

Row 31 – 34: Repeat Rows 29 and 30. <26 st>

Switch to Love Letter color yarn.

Row 35 – 36: Repeat decrease row. <22 st>

Switch to Oyster color yarn.

Row 37 – 42: Repeat Rows 29 and 30. <16 st>

Switch to Love Letter color yarn.

Row 43 – 44: Repeat decrease row. <12 st>

Switch to Oyster color yarn.

Row 45 – 52: Repeat Rows 29 and 30. <4 st>

Row 53: Ch 1, sc2tog twice, turn. <2 st>

Row 54: Ch 1, sc2tog. <1 st>

Fasten off.

Picking the Love Letter Color yarn back up, make a sc border around the your square.

Make 1 sc in every row and 2 sc before and after each corner.

Work 2 rounds.

Fasten off and weave in the ends.
