His Scarf Free Knitting Pattern

His scarf free knitting pattern

Finding the perfect easy scarf knitting pattern for the special men in your life is not always easy. His scarf is a simple fisherman ribbed scarf knitting pattern.

The scarf free knitting pattern is made with a simple 2 row repeat, great for beginners. The fisherman’s rib is one of my favorite knitting stitches for scarf patterns as it is completely reversible.

The mixed color effect of this two color scarf knitting pattern is achieved by knitting with 2 threads of yarn at the same time.

Materials

  • 7 mm knitting needles. I use this stainless steel set. They are not the prettiest but they are very cheap and convenient. You get a whole range of sizes with whom you can make most projects.
  • I used the grey Royal yarn from Zeeman and a green yarn I had in my statch (brilliant me removed the labels a long time ago so I can’t give you the link). To get a thicker yarn and a mixed color this pattern is knitted using 2 different threads of yarn at the same time. You need 2 skeins of each (total 400g, approximately 1000m). I used 2 yarns of the same thickness and material. If you want to get one dominant color and a less pronounced color you could use 2 yarns of different thicknesses. Try to use the same material though as they might react differently to washing and wear.

Because the yarn I used is not available everywhere, and I know how painful it is to try to find equivalent yarn which will give you the same effect I have selected a few equivalent yarns for you. I haven’t tried them out myself, but they look so pretty, check them out!

Have a close look at the structure of the ribbed scarf. This will greatly help you understand the pattern and make it much easier. No more counting involved.

If you look at it in columns from left to right on the above picture, you have one column in seed stitch, one column in purl stitch, one column in seed stitch and one column in knit stitch. This pattern is repeated across the whole width of the scarf. To get this you use the following rows:

  • Row 1: * k3, p1 * repeat until last 3 st, k3.
  • Row 2: k1, p1,* k3, p1 * repeat until last st, k1.

Repeat these 2 rows until your scarf is 170 cm / 67″ long or your desired length.

At first, you need to be quite focused but after a few rows, you will see the pattern and will be able to make this while watching your favorite series on Netflix (Grey’s Anatomy for me).

Bind off and weave in the ends. Carefully block your scarf.
