Materials
- 4 mm / US 6 knitting needles
- DK weight yarn: LB Collection® Superwash Merino Yarn (100% superwash merino wool, 100g/3.5oz, 280m/306yd): You will need about 28g/78m/85yd in Elm [486-171W].
- Tapestry needle
Size
This section is approximately 22 cm/8.5” high and 40 cm/15.75” wide after blocking.
The stitch featured in this section requires a multiple of 8st + 12st for the ribbing edges.
Abbreviations & Instructions
- st = stitch
- k = knit
- p = purl
- ssk = slip slip knit; left-leaning decrease
- k2tog = knit 2 stitches together, right-leaning decrease
- sl1k = slip 1 stitch knitwise
Repeat instructions between [] the indicated number of times or until the end of the row.
The final number of stitches is indicated at the end of the row between < >.
Notes
- To improve the neat finish of your ssk and avoid a staircase effect on the ssk diagonals: slip the 1st st as if to knit, slip the 2nd st as if to purl (instead of knit) then finish the stitch as usual. This will twist the back stitch making it tighter and giving the overall decrease a neater finish.
- In this section not all yarn overs are just before or after a decrease.

Finishing: Divider + Final Ribbing
Switch to Antique color yarn and work a divider section (refer to part 1) before finishing off with the ribbing.
Ribbing
Work one more knit row: Sl1k, p1, [k1, p1] twice, knit until last 6st, [k1, p1] three times.
Then [k1, p1] across for 8 rows.
Cast off and weave in your ends.
Blocking
You’re done with the knitting part, make sure to weave in all the ends.
To make your shawl is even prettier, soften your fabric, flatten your edges and most importantly here open up your lace stitches wet block your project.
Don’t skip this step as it can make a huge difference. Read my detailed tutorial on why block, how-to, and all my tips and tricks if you need help.
A few extra tips for blocking this lace shawl:
- Lace stitches will open up a lot when blocking, make sure to let them open up nicely.
- Block each section to the final section dimensions: 24 cm/9.5 “ high (including one divider). Although the row count isn’t exactly identical because of the different pattern repeats for each section this will ensure they all end up the same size and your shawl looks even.
- Check your yarn label, some superwash merinos are meant to be machine washed and tumble dried. Lionbrand superwash used for the sample is recommended to machine wash and lay flat for blocking, so I machine washed it then pinned flat to dry.
