If you’re looking for a cute little sweater to make for your baby or toddler, this crochet pattern is such a fun one to try. It’s worked in simple panels that get sewn together, so nothing too tricky, but the puff flower texture makes it look extra special. The design has a sweet, handmade vibe that’s perfect for everyday wear, playdates, or even dressing up a bit.
I used a soft worsted weight cotton yarn for this sweater, which makes it comfy for little ones and easy to wash (always a win!). The sleeves taper in nicely for a neat fit, and they’re finished off with the same puff flower detail as the body so the whole piece ties together. It’s a cozy, lightweight layer that’s sure to become a favorite in your little one’s wardrobe.

Pops of Petals Girls Crochet Sweater Pattern Construction
The front and back panels of the sweater are worked flat and sewn together. Sleeves are then added by picking up stitches at the armhole and are worked in the round, turning after joining each round. The neckline is then added in the round using the continuous spiral method to finish off the neck opening.
The back panel is a simple rectangle while the front panel has some shaping to form a lower front neck opening. The sleeves are tapered towards the cuff and finished with the same puff flower detail as the body.

Size
The crochet sweater pattern is available in 13 sizes: 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, 18 months, 24 months, 4 years, 6 years, 8 years, 10 years, 12 years, 14 years, 16 years. Sizes are written as 3 (6, 12, 18, 24) months (4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16) years throughout the pattern. Pictures illustrate the 6 years size.
The sweater is designed with 10 cm / 4” ease at the chest.
Below are the final sweater measurements for the different sizes.
- Bust circumference: 51 (51, 63, 63, 63) (75, 75, 75, 87, 87, 99, 99) cm / 20 (20, 24.5, 24.5, 24.5) (29.5, 29.5, 29.5, 34, 34, 39, 39)”.
- Upper arm circumference: 20.5 (20.5, 22, 23.5, 24.5) (27.5, 28.5, 31.5, 34, 36.5, 38, 40.5) cm / 8.25 (8.25, 8.75, 9.25, 9.75) (10.75, 11.25, 12.25, 13.5, 14.5, 15, 16)”.
- Sleeve length: 15.5 (16.5, 19, 20.5, 21.5) (26.5, 29, 31.5, 34.5, 38, 40.5, 42) / 6 (6.5, 7.5, 8, 8.5) (10.5, 11.5, 12.5, 13.5, 15, 16, 16.5)
- Length: 25 (25, 29, 29, 33.5) (37.5, 41.5, 46, 50, 54, 58.5, 62.5) cm / 9.75 (9.75, 11.5, 11.5, 13) (14.75, 16.5, 18, 19.75, 21.25, 23, 24.5)”.
To adjust the length, e.g. for a cropped style or a tunic/dress style garment or to match the wearer’s proportions, add/remove a pattern repeat to both the front and back panels (+- 8 cm / 3”) before shaping for the neck area. For smaller adjustments, you can add/remove rows of sc at the beginning of the panels (refer to notes in the pattern).
Don’t forget to adjust your yarn quantity accordingly.
Gauge
The gauge for this pattern (blocked!), in sc, is 15 st by 24 rows for a 10 cm by 10 cm / 4” by 4” square.
Abbreviations
This pattern uses US notations.
- st = stitch
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- Rnd = round
- sl st = slip stitch
- sp = space
- yo = yarn over
- RS = Right side
- WS = Wrong side
Notes
Work instructions between [ ] the indicated number of times or until the end of the row / round.
The final number of stitches is indicated at the end of the row / round between < >.
The turning ch 1 does not count as a stitch throughout the pattern except if mentioned otherwise.
Each ch-2 sp counts as 1 st for stitch count purposes throughout the pattern.
The pattern is written in crochet shorthand. For example:
- “sc 1” means to single crochet in the next stitch,
- “sc 2” means to single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches,
- and “2 sc” means to single crochet twice in the next st.
Construction
The front and back panels of the sweater are worked flat and sewn together. Sleeves are then added by picking up stitches at the armhole and are worked in the round, turning after joining each round. The neckline is then added in the round using the continuous spiral method to finish off the neck opening.
The back panel is a simple rectangle while the front panel has some shaping to form a lower front neck opening. The sleeves are tapered towards the cuff and finished with the same puff flower detail as the body.
Special Stitches and Repeated Patterns
- Puff stitch (5 half double crochet puff worked all in one st) = yarn over (yo), insert hook in indicated st, yo, pull up a loop, [yo, insert hook in same st, yo, pull up a loop] 4 times, yo, pull through all 11 loops on the hook. There is no ch 1 to close the puff stitch.
Note: For this pattern your puff stitches will always be worked on wrong side rows so they will show prominently on the right side when you turn your work.
Puff Flower Stitch: All panels of the Sweater are made with this puff and eyelet flower stitch. The stitch uses a multiple of 18 + 1 st. Half repeats are used at row/rnd ends for

Stitch pattern will start at row 6 of front and back panels.

Assembly
Start by sewing the shoulder seams and side seams, taking care to leave an armhole opening of 11 (11.5, 12, 12.5, 13) (14.5, 15, 16.5, 18, 19, 20, 21.5) cm / 4.25 (4.5, 4.75, 5, 5) (5.75, 6, 6.5, 7, 7.5, 7.75, 8.5)” on both the front and back panels.
Sleeves
Make 2
With your 5 mm / US H – 8 crochet hook, join the yarn in the armhole opening at the upper end of the side seam.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc 31 (31, 33, 35, 37) (41, 43, 47, 51, 55, 57, 61) around the armhole, sl st in ch-1, turn.
Rnd 2 – 3 (plain round): Ch 1, sc across, sl st in ch-1, turn.
Rnd 4 (decrease round): Ch 1, sc2tog, sc until last 2st, sc2tog, sl st in ch-1, turn. <2 sts dec’d>
Continue in plain rounds (as Rnd 2) with decrease rounds (as Rnd 4) every 3rd (4th, 4th, 3rd, 4th) (4th, 4th, 4th, 4th, 3rd, 3rd, 3rd) round until you have worked 8 (7, 8, 9, 9) (10, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 17) decrease rounds in total and have 15 (17, 17, 17, 19) (21, 23, 25, 27, 27,27, 27) sts in your current round.
Work 6 (2, 0, 7, 0) (0, 2, 2, 2, 12, 11, 9) more plain rounds or until sleeve is 3.5cm/1.5” less than desired length.

Cuff:
Cuff Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 1, sc across, turn.
Cuff Rnd 2 (WS): Ch 1, sc 6 (6, 7, 7, 8) (8, 10, 11, 11, 11, 12, 12), puff, sc, puff, sc 6 (6, 7, 7, 8) (8, 10, 11, 11, 11, 12, 12), turn.
Cuff Rnd 3 (RS): Ch 1, sc 6 (6, 7, 7, 8) (8, 10, 11, 11, 11, 12, 12), sl st 2, sc 7 (7, 8, 8, 9) (9, 11, 12, 12, 12, 13, 13), turn.
Cuff Rnd 4 (WS): Ch 1, sc 5 (5, 6, 6, 7) (8, 9, 10, 10, 10, 11, 11), puff, sc, ch 2, skip 1 sl st, sc in 2nd sl st, puff, sc 5 (5, 6, 6, 7) (8, 9, 10, 10, 10, 11, 11), turn.
Cuff Rnd 5 (RS): Ch 1, sc across working only 1 sc in each ch-2 sp, turn.
Cuff Rnd 6 (WS): Ch 1, sc 6 (6, 7, 7, 8) (8, 10, 11, 11, 11, 12, 12), puff, sc, puff, sc 6 (6, 7, 7, 8) (8, 10, 11, 11, 11, 12, 12), turn.
Cuff Rnd 7 – 9: Ch 1, sc across, turn.
Repeat for the other sleeve.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Neckline
With your 5 mm / US H – 8 crochet hook, join the yarn in the neck opening by one of the shoulder seams.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc 51 (54, 58, 62, 66) (69, 71, 72, 73, 75, 78, 81) around the neck opening.
In the next two rounds, work in a continuous spiral rather than joined rounds to ensure a seamless appearance. This means you’ll start by working straight into the first st of Rnd 1, i.e. without working a sl st to join the first and last stitch of the previous rnd the or a ch 1 to reach the height of a new rnd.
Rnd 2 – 3: Ch 1, sc across, turn.
Work a slip stitch in the next stitch to avoid leaving the final stitch with a stepped appearance.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Blocking
You’re done with the crocheting part. Make sure to weave in all the ends (except for sewing).
To make your lace sweater even prettier, help even your stitches and puff up the flower motifs, wet block your project with the right side outermost.
Don’t skip this step as it can make a huge difference. Read my detailed tutorial on why block, how-to, and all my tips and tricks if you need help.
