The Boxy Blanket Stripe uses front post double crochet and back post double crochet to make a fun textured square pattern repeat. Designed as a sampler blanket stripe, the Boxy stitch repeat can easily be adapted to be used for a variety of other projects!

How to Use This Blanket Section

If you’re not interested in the blankets above you can easily use this pattern as part of your own design.

The Boxy Section has a stitch repeat of 16 stitches. You could use this design for your own blanket but also for other projects like pillow covers, baskets, or other home decor items.

Before you Start

Materials

You will need about 80g/193m/211yd *

Yarn Usage: 170gr/ 370yds/ 340m

Assume highest requirement to be sure you have enough

Size

The crochet blanket section is designed for the Serenity Throw Blanket CAL.

The section is 127 cm / 50” wide and 12.5 cm / 5” high.

If you want to use this design for another blanket and change the size, you can add / remove a multiple of 16 stitches.

Gauge

The gauge for this pattern, in alternating rows of hdc and dc, is 15 st by 11 rows for a 10 cm by 10 cm / 4” by 4” square.

Abbreviations

This pattern uses US notations.

  • st = stitch
  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • fpdc = front post double crochet
  • bpdc = back post double crochet

Notes

Work instructions between [] the indicated number of times or until the end of the row / round.

The final number of stitches is indicated at the end of the row / round between < >.

The turning ch 1 and ch 2 don’t count as stitches throughout the pattern except if mentioned otherwise.

The pattern is written in crochet shorthand.  For example:

  • “sc 1” means to single crochet in the next stitch,
  • “sc 2” means to single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches,
  • and “2 sc” means to single crochet twice in the next st.

Construction

The Boxy blanket section is designed as part of the Serenity Throw Blanket CAL. It’s a gorgeous throw blanket designed in strips of 12.5 cm / 5” high.

Each section is worked over 192 stitches. In between each section we recommend you work 2 rows of single crochet.

Make all the strips, just a few, repeat the ones you prefer to make your own Serenity Throw Blanket.

Special Stitches and Repeated Patterns

  1. Front post double crochet (fpdc):

Yarn over, insert hook from front to back to front behind the double crochet post below, yarn over, and pull up a long loop (3 loops on hook).

Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over, and pull through the remaining loops.

2. Back post double crochet (bpdc):

Yarn over, insert hook from back to front to back behind the double crochet post below, yarn over, and pull up a long loop (3 loops on hook).

Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over, and pull through the remaining loops.

The Actual Blanket Section Crochet Pattern

For visual learners, refer to the crochet chart after the written instructions.

If this is the first blanket section you make:

With your 5 mm / US H – 8 crochet hook, Ch 192 + 1 st.

Row 1: Hdc in 2nd st from hook, hdc across, turn. <192 st>

If you’re adding this section to another section:

Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, hdc across, turn. <192 st>

Row 2 (WS): Ch 2, dc across, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, hdc across, turn.

Row 4: Ch 2, dc across, turn.

Row 5: Ch 1, hdc 12, [fpdc 8, hdc 8] until last 20 st, fpdc 8, hdc 12, turn.

Row 6: Ch 2, dc 12, [bpdc 8, dc 8] until last 20 st, bpdc 8, dc 12, turn.

Row 7 – 10: Repeat Row 5 – 6

Row 11: Ch 1, hdc across, turn.

Row 12: Ch 2, dc across, turn.

Row 13: Ch 1, hdc across, turn.

Row 14: Ch 1, sc across, turn.

You’re done with the crocheting part for this section. Once you’ve added all the sections you want, make sure to weave in all the ends (except for sewing).
