Baby booties are one of the cutest things you can knit, but they can also get quite intricate. That’s not the case of this Strawberry Seed baby booties knitting pattern! Knit on straight needles, with worsted weight wool yarn they work up really quickly. This simple construction is one of my favorites because it allows you to work with straight needles while being 90% seamless.

Before you Start Knitting your Booties
- 5 mm / US 8 knitting needles. You can see on the pictures I used my circular needles out of habit but you don’t need circular needles. You can make these baby booties with straight needles. (Confused about all these types of needles? This post is for you)
- Worsted weight wool yarn: 20g white and 20g pink yarn.
- Tapestry needle to weave in the ends. I love this set as it has different eye sizes for different yarn thicknesses and it comes in a small tube which is very convenient so I don’t lose them.
I loved working with this affordable 100% Alpaca wool yarn. It really slides effortlessly on your needless. The pink color has some hues of bleu which really give it a more sophisticated note. The offwhite is just how I like it, not real white but doesn’t lean on the yellow creamish either.
Unfortunately, this yarn seems unavailable on Amazon currently so I have listed a few suggestions for substitutes here:
The pattern is available in sizes 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, 18 months and 24 months written as follows throughout the pattern: 12 months (3, 6, 18, 24).
The step by step pictures show the 12 months size.
- k = knit
- st = stitch
- garter stitch = knit on both sides of the project
- yo = yarn over
- k2tog = knit 2 stitches together
Repeat instructions between the indicated number of times or until the end of the row.
With 5mm / US 8 needles, the gauge in garter stitch is 16 st by 32 rows for a 10 cm / 4” square.
Tips and Tricks
This short video shows you how easy it is to knit the eyelets. A simple yarn over and knit 2 stitches together is all you need to do!
The Actual Baby Booties Knitting Pattern
Both booties are identical, make 2
The Ankle Section
On 5 mm / US 8 needles cast on 24 (18, 18, 24, 24) stitches with the white color yarn.
Knit in garter stitch (knit on both sides of the project) for 2 rows.
k1, [yo, k2tog, k4] 3(2, 2, 3, 3) times, yo, k2tog, k3.
Knit 5 rows in garter stitch.
K4, [yo, k2tog, k4] 3 (2, 2, 3, 3) times, yo, k2tog.
Knit 3 rows in garter stitch.
Switch to pink color yarn. Leave a long white tail for sewing.
Knit 2 rows in garter stitch.
Forming the Toes
From now on you will start shaping the toecap. This is done with the middle 8 (6, 6, 8, 8) stitches.
On the next row, knit 16 (12, 12, 16, 16). Leave the remaining 8 (6, 6, 8, 8) st on the needle and turn as if you finished the row.
On the next row, slip the first st and knit 7 (5, 5, 7, 7) st. Continue knitting these middle st in garter st and slipping the first st for 14 (12, 12, 14, 16) more rows.
With your left needle, pick up 8 (7, 7, 8, 9) st along the side of the middle section. Because you slipped the first st of each row, you can see a little loop for each stitch you need to pick up.
Keep knitting these new stitches and the 8 (6, 6, 8, 8) st we put on hold.
On the next row, knit until the end of the toecap section, with your right needle pick up 8 (7, 7, 8, 9) more st along the edge (for the other side of the toecap). Keep knitting until the end of the row.
Knit all 40 (32, 32, 40, 42) st in garter stitch for 5 rows. This will give its height to the sock.
The Sole of the Bootie
Go back to working with the middle stitches only. Knit 23 (18, 18, 23, 25), k2tog, turn
Knit 7 (5, 5, 7, 7), k2tog, turn
Repeat this last row until you have 12 (10, 10, 12, 12) st left on your needle. Finish the row and cast off all the stitches.
Turn the sock inside out and sew up the backside.
Pinch over about 2 stitches before seaming vertically. Refer to the below picture.
Use the white tail to seam the pink section and the white for the white
To block your finished booties you can either block them flat or fill them with some cloth to make them take their best shape.
Make a matching set with the matching hat, cardigan and blanket. Enjoy and don’t forget to share!

Slightly confused, why am I pinching two stitches?
Susan P McAllisterMarch 10, 2020 at 3:00 am
Number of stitches of the paid for and downloiaded bootee is not the same as the web site.
Badly written pattern. Trying to get the sole tio work out. Paid pattern has 23 stitchesm K2tog. turn.
Website has 18. Am I woirking off the center 18 stitches only. Needs more clarification.
