The Crochet Square Pattern Construction

The pumpkin pattern is made by simple eyelets (chain one and skip the stitch below) which makes it a great fall crochet blanket square pattern for beginners. The rest of the square is a simple double crochet background.

Before you Start

Materials

  • 5 mm/ US H-8 crochet hook
  • WeCrochet Swish (worsted weight, 100% fine superwash merino wool, 50g/1.75oz, 100m/110yd)
  • Tapestry needle to weave in the ends

Size

The Pumpkin Square is 20 cm / 8” square.

Gauge

The gauge for this pattern, in dc stitch, is 16 st by 10 rows for a 10 cm by 10 cm square (4” by 4”).

Abbreviations & Instructions

This pattern uses US notations.

  • st = stitch
  • ch = chain
  • dc = double crochet

Notes

Work instructions between [] the indicated number of times or until the end of the row / round.

The final number of stitches is indicated at the end of the row / round between < >.

The turning ch 1, ch 2 don’t count as stitches throughout the pattern except if mentioned otherwise.

The pattern is written in crochet shorthand.  For example:

  • “sc 1” means to single crochet in the next stitch,
  • “sc 2” means to single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches,
  • and “2 sc” means to single crochet twice in the next st.

The pumpkin design is completely symmetrical. Right handed crocheters can start Row 1 (the starting chain doesn’t count) in the bottom right corner while left handed crocheters can work from the bottom left corner instead.

Use a turning chain of ch-2 for every row.

Blocking

You are done with the crocheting part. Make sure to weave in all the ends.

To make your square nice and flat, help even your stitches and flatten your edges, block your project.
