You never have too many storage baskets in house!

  • In the kitchen, I use them to hold fruit, spices or snack for the kiddos.
  • In the nursery for their toiletries and products, diapers, wipes / cotton pads etc.
  • In your bathroom for your makeup, products etc
  • In the entrance hall to empty your pockets: keys, wallet, etc
  • In the living room for your current WIP or your kiddo’s toys

I could go on and on but you get, storage baskets are everywhere in the house so they better look good too!

The waffle stitch crochet basket is an easy crochet basket tutorial for a convenient and good-looking storage basket! It’s made with t-shirt yarn and a wooden base for convenience. In just 6 rounds, you have a gorgeous basket! Size and shape are easily adjustable so you can adapt it to your needs.

Crochet with a Wooden Base

First time crocheting with a wooden base for me! It is surprisingly simple, all you have to do is consider the holes as your base row of stitches.

Not convinced? Just have a look at this short video where I show you how to get your project started.

I’m always intimidated when a project requires more than just yarn and a hook. I’ve run away more than once from a project because I couldn’t find the right embellishments. Don’t you worry, we’ve got you covered! You can grab the kit with all the materials you need below.

The Gorgeous T-Shirt Yarn and Kit

For the waffle stitch basket, I’ve teamed up with the lovely Irina from Knitznpurlz.

When it comes to t-shirt yarn, she’s my go-to! You might remember my Chunky bathroom rug or linen potholder designed in her beautiful yarn. Perfectly regular yarn thickness, no knots ever, and a gorgeous choice of colors is what you’ll get with her yarn, every single time. She also has some fun wooden bases and themed yarns/bases for holidays.

The Waffle stitch basket kit comes with everything you need to complete your basket!

Your box includes:

  • the ad-free PDF Pattern
  • 100 yards of Knitznpurlz t-shirt yarn in the color of your choice
  • 8″ / 20 cm wooden base

Protect Your Wrists

Crocheting with t-shirt yarn can be strenuous on your wrists, especially when making baskets as you want the stitches to be tight so the walls hold up nicely.

Take your time, crochet your basket at your own pace, and don’t hesitate to take a break even though it’s only a 6 round project.

If you tend to crochet loosely or if your basket walls aren’t stiff enough, go down a hook size.

Different Base

You’d be surprised how much this basket can hold! With the 20 cm / 8″ base pictured in this post, it holds 4 apples, 8 clementines and 5 passion fruits!

If you want to make a basket with a different base size or even a non-square base, you totally can! The pattern is very easy to adjust to any basket size and shape. It’s all detailed in the size section of the pattern.

However, if you work with a different base or size, your yarn quantity will be different, make sure you take that into account.

Different Yarn

Not a fan of t-shirt yarn? No problem, you can totally make this crochet basket pattern with a different yarn. Any super bulky yarn will work great. You can even hold 2 strands of chunky yarn together if you want to use up your stash.

Materials

wooden base and T-shirt yarn from Knitznpurlz

Crochet Basket Size

The basket has a square base of 20 cm / 8” and a height of 10 cm / 4”.

To adjust the size of the basket, you can easily work with a different base size. Non-square bases can also be used.

You need a multiple of 3 st at the end of round 2. If needed, you can add/remove a dc2tog in round 1 to get the correct stitch count. Make sure you spread the dc2tog at opposite sides of the basket to keep an even shape.

If you want to adjust the basket height, you can add/remove a repeat of round 3 – 4.

Gauge

The gauge for this pattern isn’t crucial. Make sure your fabric is very stiff, otherwise, your basket walls will collapse.

I tend to crochet tightly, if you’re a loose crocheter, go down one hook size.

Abbreviations

This pattern uses US notations.

  • st = stitch
  • dc = double crochet
  • dc2tog = double crochet 2 stitches together (decrease)
  • fpdc = front post double crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch

Notes

Work instructions between [] the indicated number of times or until the end of the row / round.

The final number of stitches is indicated at the end of the row / round between < >.

The turning ch 1, ch 2 don’t count as stitches throughout the pattern except if mentioned otherwise.

The pattern is written in crochet shorthand.  For example:

  • “sc 1” means to single crochet in the next stitch,
  • “sc 2” means to single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches,
  • and “2 sc” means to single crochet twice in the next st.

Special Stitches

  • The crochet basket features the waffle stitch (fully detailed in the pattern below). Find the full stitch video tutorial on my Youtube channel here. For this basket the stitch is worked in the round, turning your work at the end of each round.
  • Front post double crochet (fpdc):
    • Yarn over, insert hook from front to back to front behind the double crochet post below (in this case the double crochet is 2 rows below), yarn over, and pull up a long loop (3 loops on hook).
    • Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over, and pull through the remaining loops.
