The turning ch 1, ch 2 and ch 3 don’t count as a stitch throughout the pattern except if mentioned otherwise.
The pattern is written in crochet shorthand. For example:
- “sc 1” means to single crochet in the next stitch,
- “sc 2” means to single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches,
- and “2 sc” means to single crochet twice in the next st.
Rows 2 and 6 are worked in the 3rd loop of the hdc from the row below. The 3rd loop is the horizontal bar that sits behind the front and back loops, on the WS of the hdc.
Blocking is essential. The lace opens up and the panel relaxes to its final measurements only after a wet block.

Blocking
You are done with the crocheting part. Make sure to weave in all the ends.
Block each panel to the following measurements:
- Panel width: 21 (25, 27, 29, 31) (35, 37, 39, 41) cm/8.25 (9.75, 10.75, 11.5, 12.25) (13.75, 14.5, 15.25, 16.25)”.
- Panel length: 190 cm/74.75″ (same for all sizes).
Blocking helps open up the lace and even out your stitches. Don’t skip this step as it can make a huge difference. Read my detailed tutorial on why block, how-to, and all my tips and tricks if you need help.
Assembly
The coverup has no shoulder seaming. Each panel is folded in half along its length, with the fold forming the shoulder line. You then slip stitch the panels together along the center back and along the side edges, leaving armhole openings.
Step 1: Fold each panel in half.
Lay 1 panel flat. Fold it in half, RS facing outwards, bringing the 2 row-end edges together. The fold runs along the foundation chain edge (or the final row edge, whichever is opposite the fold) and forms the shoulder line. Repeat with the second panel.
Step 2: Place the panels side by side.
Lay both folded panels flat next to each other, folds at the top, with their long edges touching. The 2 panels together form the full coverup: the touching long edges become the center back seam. The outer long edges of each panel stay open and become the front opening.
Step 3: Slip stitch the center back.
With the panels held right sides up, work a row of slip stitches up 85 cm/33.5” forming the back seam. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Step 4: Mark the armholes and slip stitch the sides.
Open the coverup and lay it flat. On each side edge, measure 28.5 (30, 31, 32, 33.5) (35, 36, 37.5, 39) cm/11.25 (11.75, 12.25, 12.5, 13.25) (13.75, 14.25, 14.75, 15.25)” down from the shoulder fold and place a stitch marker. This is where the armhole ends and the side seam begins.
Fold the coverup so the front and back edges of 1 side meet, right sides out. Work a row of slip stitches from the hem up to the armhole marker, joining the 2 edges, a length of 66.5 (65, 64, 63, 61.5) (60, 59, 57.5, 56) cm/26.25 (25.5, 25.25, 24.75, 24.25) (23.5, 23.25, 22.75, 22)”. Fasten off and weave in the ends. Repeat on the opposite side.
Your finished coverup should have a bust circumference of 84 (100, 108, 116, 124) (140, 148, 156, 164) cm/33 (39.25, 42.5, 45.75, 48.75) (55, 58.25, 61.5, 64.5)” and a worn length of 95 cm/37.5″ from shoulder to hem.
