Before you Start your Holiday Crochet Square

The crochet square is 13.5 cm / 5”.

The gauge for this pattern, in sc, is 16 st by 18 rows for a 10 cm by 10 cm / 4” by 4” square.

This pattern uses US notations.

  • st = stitch
  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet

Work instructions between [] the indicated number of times or until the end of the row/round.

The final number of stitches is indicated at the end of the row/round between < >.

The turning ch 1 and ch 2 don’t count as stitches throughout the pattern except if mentioned otherwise.

The pattern is written in crochet shorthand.  For example:

  • “sc 1” means to single crochet in the next stitch,
  • “sc 2” means to single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches,
  • and “2 sc” means to single crochet twice in the next st.

Colorwork is indicated with the abbreviated color between () before the stich count to work in this color. For example (W) sc 8 means single crochet the next 8 stitches in white.

Tips and Tricks

  • If color changing is new to you: when working the last part of the indicated stitch, insert hook, draw up a loop, (do not yarn over with the same color to finish the stitch), finish the stitch with the new color according to the pattern.

  • When using more than one color in a row:
    • Work over the unused colors in tapestry style for the candy cane part.
    • Leave the red and white yarn hanging at the end of the cane section and work with only the green yarn for the rest of the square. You’ll pick the red and white yarn back up where you left them on the next row.
