The Gingham motif is a timeless classic but it can be a bit heavy for an entire blanket. I just love how it turned out as a wide decorative border on a plain blanket middle section.

Don’t let the intricate look of interlocking colors impress you though! Each round is worked with just 2 colors in intarsia style (carrying both colors along the entire round so no ends to weave in).

The Gingham Border Blanket is designed for you to be able to easily adapt this crochet blanket border pattern to any blanket center you want.

With its simple basic stitches (all single crochet), this gingham crochet blanket border pattern is an easy choice for whipping up a quick gift in worsted weight yarn. For example, you can make a gorgeous unisex baby blanket to gift a wonderful friend at her baby shower. Or choose any of our 7 sizes from baby to king to suit your needs. Go ahead and give it a try!

Choosing Your Colors

For the Gingham pattern to come out nicely you will need 3 coordinating colors. One light, one medium, and one darker, ideally all 3 should be in the same color family.

The concept of the gingham pattern is for the darkest color to correspond to a double layer of the medium color.

Of course, you’re welcome to move away from this classic gingham pattern but if you want to get the same effect of lines of different colors crossing over each other making darker and lighter areas you’ll need 3 coordinating colors.

I also recommend one of the colors to be the same as the central piece of the blanket for the border to work well with the centerpiece and not seem disconnected.

Classics on the Edge Collection

This blanket pattern is part of the Classics on the Edge Collection. It is a set of 4 easy crochet blanket patterns where classic crochet blanket constructions / types are revisited by featuring them on a wide blanket border with a sober blanket center.

All crochet blanket border patterns come in several sizes (from baby to king size) with instructions on how to adjust the crochet border instructions for any blanket project.

Before you Start

Materials

  • 5.5 mm / US I – 9 hook
  • Worsted weight yarn: Royal Zeeman yarn (100% acrylic, 100g/3.5oz, 241m/264yd):
    • 3 (6, 7, 13, 22, 23, 27) skeins in off-white (MC)
    • 2 (3, 3, 5, 6, 6, 7) skeins in light blue (A)
    • 1 (2, 2, 3, 4, 4, 4) Skeins in dark blue (B)
      • You can easily substitute with any worsted weight yarn you want.
  • Tapestry needle to weave in the ends.

Because the yarn I used is not available everywhere, and I know how painful it is to try to find equivalent yarn which will give you the same effect I have selected a few equivalent yarns for you. I haven’t tried them out myself, but they look so pretty, check them out!

How to Use the Gingham Edging on Another Blanket

Of course, you could use this gingham edging pattern on any blanket of yours. In order to do so, you need each side of your blanket to have an uneven multiple of 9 stitches (including corner st) for your starting round. You can then simply follow the instructions starting with round 2 in the Gingham Border section below.

The width of the border is 22 cm / 8.5”.

Abbreviations

This pattern uses US notations.

  • st = stitch
  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch

Notes

Work instructions between [] the indicated number of times or until the end of the row/round. Instructions between () are worked in the same stitch/space.

The final number of stitches is indicated at the end of the row/round between < >.

The turning ch 1, ch 2 don’t count as stitches throughout the pattern except if mentioned.

The pattern is written in crochet shorthand. For example:

  • “dc 1” means to double crochet in the next stitch,
  • “dc 2” means to double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches,
  • and “2 dc” means to double crochet twice in the next st.

The color the stitches should be worked in is indicated in () before the stitches.

For example: (A) sc 5, (B) sc 7 means single crochet 5 stitches in color A, then single crochet 7 stitches in color B. Refer to the materials section for the colors A, B and MC refer to.

Tips and Tricks

  • To change yarn color, work last st of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete st.

  • When using more than one color in a row, working over the unused color in tapestry style.

The Actual Crochet Blanket Border Pattern

Crochet Blanket Body

With your 5.5 mm / US I – 9 hook and MC yarn, ch 45 (99, 117, 171, 261, 279, 333) + 1.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc across. <99 st>

Row 2: Ch 1, sc across, turn.
