Before you Start

Materials

Size

The blanket pattern is available in 2 sizes:

  • Baby: 110cm / 43.3” square
  • Throw: 146cm / 57.4” square.

Sizes are noted baby (throw) throughout the pattern. The pictures illustrate the baby size.

Tuesday blanket crochet pattern

Gauge

The gauge for this pattern, in hdc, is 15 st by 10 rows for a 10 cm by 10 cm square (4” by 4”).

Abbreviations

This pattern uses US notations.

  • st = stitch
  • ch = chain
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet

Notes

Work instructions between [] the indicated number of times or until the end of the row / round.

The final number of stitches is indicated at the end of the row / round between < >.

The turning ch 1, ch 2 count as stitches throughout the pattern except if mentioned otherwise.

The pattern is written in crochet shorthand.  For example:

  • “sc 1” means to single crochet in the next stitch,
  • “sc 2” means to single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches,
  • and “2 sc” means to single crochet twice in the next st.

Special stitches and Techniques

  • Back loop only: Work the stitch as you normally would but instead of working through both loops, only go through the back loop.
  • Front loop only: Work the stitch as you normally would but instead of working through both loops, only go through the front loop.
  • The magic circle (aka magic ring) is used to start the blanket. If you’re not familiar with this technique, have a look at my detailed tutorial (includes a video).

The Actual Crochet Blanket Crochet Pattern

With your 5 mm / US H – 8 crochet hook, ch 2, dc 7 in a magic ring, sl st in the 2nd ch to close the circle.

Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as a st here and throughout), 2 dc in each stitch, finish with a sl st in the 2nd ch. <16 st>

Round 2: Ch 2, dc, [(2dc, ch 1, 2dc) in the same st, dc 3] around, [(2dc, ch 1, 2dc) in the same st, dc and finish with a sl st in the 2nd ch. <32 st>

Round 3: Ch 2, [dc until the ch-1 space, (2dc, ch 1, 2dc) in the ch-1 space] repeat around, dc until end of the round. Join with a sl st in the 2nd ch. <48 st>

Round 4 – 10:Repeat Round 3 seven times. <160 st>

First part of the crochet blanket pattern: grey square

Switch to pink yarn.

Round 11: Ch 1, [hdc until the ch-1 space, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in the ch-1 space] around. Join with a sl st. <168 st>

Round 12: Ch 1, [hdc in the back loop only until the ch-1 space, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in the ch-1 space] around. Join with a sl st. <176 st>

Round 13 – 14: Repeat Round 12 twice. <192 st>

Adding the first colored section to the crochet blanket

Grey section:

Switch to grey color yarn.

Round 15: Ch 2, [dc in the back loop only until the ch-1 space, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in the ch-1 space] around. Join with a sl st.

Repeat Round 3 four times.

Switch to blue color yarn. Repeat Round 11. Repeat Round 12 three times.

Repeat a grey section.

Switch to pink color yarn. Repeat Round 11. Repeat Round 12 three times.

Repeat a grey section.

Switch to white color yarn. Repeat Round 11. Repeat Round 12 three times.

Repeat a grey section.

Switch to pink color yarn. Repeat Round 11. Repeat Round 12 three times.

Repeat a grey section.

For the baby size: Bind off

For the throw size:

Switch to blue color yarn. Repeat Round 11. Repeat Round 12 three times.

Repeat a grey section.

Switch to pink color yarn. Repeat Round 11. Repeat Round 12 three times.

Repeat a grey section.           

Bind off.

Blocking and Finishing Touches

You’re done with the crocheting part. Make sure to weave in all the ends.

Carefully block your blanket to give it its best shape.
