  • ch = chain
  • hdc = half double crochet

Work instructions between [] the indicated number of times or until the end of the row / round.

The final number of stitches is indicated at the end of the row / round between < >.

The turning ch 1 / ch 2 doesn’t count as a stitch throughout the pattern except if mentioned otherwise.

The pattern is written in crochet shorthand.  For example:

  • “sc 1” means to single crochet in the next stitch,
  • “sc 2” means to single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches,
  • and “2 sc” means to single crochet twice in the next st.

Tips and Tricks for the Alpine Stitch Pattern

  • The stitch pattern is a repeat of sc rows and dc/fpdc rows.
  • The fpdc are worked in the dc right below, 2 rows down.
  • If the stitch 2 rows below is a dc, then work an fpdc around it. If it’s an fpdc, then work a dc in the sc above it.
  • Because the fpdc stitches are worked around the dc two rows down, there will be an unused stitch left behind the fpdc. Ignore this stitch when working the next stitch.
  • If you want wider or narrower borders, you could move the border stitch markers by any multiple of two stitches but be aware that Alpine stitch uses a lot more yarn than the plainer stitch used at the center of the blanket so making the border wider would require extra yarn.

Centre Section

Turn your blanket so the right side is facing you and place stitch markers on the 12th stitch from the start of the row and on the 11th stitch from the end of the row. These show the first stitch of the plain section and the first stitch of the second border, which can be easy to miss otherwise due to the diagonal appearance of the Alpine stitch pattern. Move markers up with each row.

Row 1 (RS): Ch 2, hdc, dc, [fpdc in dc 2 rows below, dc] until first marker, sc to second marker, [dc, fpdc in dc 2 rows below] until last st, hdc, turn.

Repeat Rows 1 to 4 until your blanket measures 79 (80, 92, 122, 127, 142, 142, 219, 264, 264, 264) cm / 31 (31.5, 36, 48, 50, 56, 56, 86, 104, 104, 104)” from the foundation chain to the last row ending with a Row 4.

Centre Section Final Rows
